How to Customize the Chat
Choose which agents users find where in the Navigator, how answers look, and which chat features are on. Agent placement and display are under the Client Settings card; the chat features are under the Features card.
Place agents
- Open Tenants → <tenant> and click the pencil on the Client Settings card.
- Expand Agent Placement. Each surface lists:
- Default Agent: the display configuration a user gets when opening the surface.
- Extra Agents: the others users can switch to.
- Pick display configurations and click Save Changes.
The surfaces are Chat Page, PDF Viewer, Tags Section and Widgets Q&A. A surface shows here only when the tenant has chat configured on it. You pick display configurations, not agents, so create one first, see Creating and editing agents.
To open the Navigator on the chat, set White Label Settings → Homepage to Chat, see Branding the Navigator.
Set how answers look
Under the same editor, Chat Display applies to every chat. Options left unset keep the Navigator's default.
| Option | Effect |
|---|---|
| Show the model under each answer | Labels each answer with the model that wrote it |
| Show message actions only on hover | Hides an answer's actions until the pointer is over it |
| Allow regenerating the last answer | Lets users ask for the last answer again |
| Allow editing an earlier question | Lets users edit a question; everything after it is removed |
| Open cited documents in a side panel | Opens citations next to the chat instead of in a new tab |
| Search steps | A search the agent runs shows as one line of text, or as its query and result chips. With chips, the Navigator asks the agent's search tools for their results (show_results) |
| Agent steps | The agent's steps show as a list, or as a timeline with source icons |
Chat Display appears once the Chat Page surface has chat configured.

Turn chat features on or off
Click the pencil on the Features card. Each feature has a Status:
| Status | Effect |
|---|---|
| Active | Visible and working |
| Disabled | Visible but greyed out; the backend does not run it |
| Hidden | Removed from the UI. Use it to test before launch. |
| Feature | What users get |
|---|---|
| Document Upload | Upload their own documents for search and chat |
| People | Find experts and authors |
| Recommendations | Personalized document recommendations, and emails at the Email Frequency from the Email Sender |
| Dictation | A microphone button in the chat and search inputs. Needs a Transcription Model, see Managing LLM models. |
| Incognito Chat | A button that starts a chat never listed in their history |
Federated Search under the same card adds external search sources (SerpAPI) next to the tenant's indexes. Add an index there (Add Federated Search Index: ID, display name, SerpAPI search engine such as google_scholar, and API key), then list it under Client Settings → Indexes with type Federated.
Pitfalls
- A display configuration placed nowhere is invisible in the chat, even when the agent is shared with everyone.
- Users who may not run an agent never see it on a surface, see Controlling who can use what.
- Changes take a moment to show, see When changes take effect.
